The braids of summer

Doing your hair in the summer is a pain, isn't it?  When it's this hot, blow drying is kind of torturous, and in all likelihood, your handiwork will evaporate the minute you go outside.  And when you're out in the wind, those little pieces in the front drive you nuts, don't they?

After having spent a fun but hot weekend in sweltering St. Louis, I've decided there is no better summer hairstyle than a well-placed braid.  (I also have a fuller appreciation for what the term “sweltering” actually means.  It involves insta-sweating when one ventures out of air conditioned territory, followed closely by insta-looking-terrible as a result of the sweating.)

I am hair-styling-challenged: until I cut my hair into a pixie for a long trip last year, I think I was the only person left on the planet who still used hot rollers, a fact over which my hair stylist will never stop making fun of me.

But I found that even I can manage a passable little French braid along my hairline.  (You should find this massively encouraging.  If a lawyer can do this, you can too!)  And this tutorial will teach you how to do an even easier, but similar kind of braid.

If you're not quite ready to go it alone, there's lots of help: Maxine Salon in Chicago just opened a Braid Bar, and styles start at $30 (less than a blowout, and without the dreaded hot air.  Although come January, we might be reconsidering this calculus).

You might be able to find a place that costs less, too: when I was in Austin for a wedding in April, the day of the outdoor wedding was super windy.  In a moment of desperation (my hair is way too short to pull back), I ducked into this cute salon, explained the situation, and asked if someone could give me a Lauren Conrad-style braid.  It only took five minutes, and they did it for free!  (I looked just as excited as Jen here, too. :))

What's your go-to summer hair trick?

How to stop your jeans from bleeding

Pinned Image
If you've ever bought a new pair of jeans and found that they've Smurf-ified your hands, purse, shirt, or (the horror) white couch, here's a good tip for you: wash them with vinegar.  Throw them in the wash machine alone (you don't want them to dye anything else).  Set your machine on the cold cycle, and when it's full of water, pour in a cup or so of white vinegar.  I should confess that when I say "or so," what I actually mean is "I have no idea, but I upended my quart-sized jug and gave it a glug or two."  Let the cycle run (don't worry: the smell will be gone once it finishes), and then hang your pants to dry.  The vinegar will set the color in your jeans, meaning you can bravely sit wherever you want, sans dye-anxiety.

PS: Also in laundry news, I used my Dreft laundry spray for the first time, and I can report that it does excellent work on blue popsicle spills (yes, I'm thirty, but in my defense, it was the Fourth of July).

Have a lovely weekend!

Bizarro, random-day-off-in-the-middle week is over.  What are you up to this weekend?  We're hitting the road later today to visit my family and wish my mom a happy birthday in person!  Any celebrating in your future?  If you're in Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium is free to Bank of America cardholders this weekend, and Heritage Bicycles and Coffee is showing the movie Breaking Away on their outdoor patio at nine on Friday night (with ice cream!).  Take care, enjoy the following, and I'll talk to you Monday.

Why aren't vitamin donuts real??

For some reason, imagining Tina Fey attending Alec Baldwin's wedding makes me giggle.  Also, it makes me want to sit next to Tina Fey in church, which would likely also involve giggling.

The most read books in the world

Some surprises here.  I love Twilight as much as the next thirty-year-old woman who feels a connection with her 14-year-old inner nerd, but I don't know that it deserves a spot in the top ten.  Perhaps the books that come in a series were each counted as a single work?

Hooray for hats

I spent my Fourth of July sleeping late, going to the beach, grilling out in the park, and riding my bike.  Clearly no time for, say, showering.  I got a pixie cut last August, and my hair isn't quite long enough for a ponytail yet.  On a day like yesterday that was full of hot, sandy, lake-watery fun and completely devoid of time for primping, I've never been more grateful for my summer straw hat!  (More than I can say for the majority of my H&M impulse purchases.)

This picture from The Sartorialist was taken in 2007 (!).  Doesn't she look completely current?  I mean, on my best day in 2012 I don't look this coolly put-together.  (This also handily undercuts the argument that fedoras are overly trendy.)

Moral of the story: a classic straw fedora, a striped tee, and patterned shorts (and a bicycle) will make you look good forever!
