The Tall and Salty Gift Guide: Things That are Just Great Gifts

For the final installment of Tall and Salty's 2014 Gift Guides, I'm rounding up a few things that would be great for just about everybody (in case you missed them, gifts for ladies are here and gifts for dudes are here).  Below are some ideas that didn't fit into those particular categories, but for which I think you'll be able to find a happy recipient.  Have a great holiday, everyone, and I'll catch you in 2014!

For families with kiddos, Babiators, adorable baby-and-kid sunglasses that come with the most amazing guarantee I've ever heard of: they replace them if they got broken or lost ($20).  Also: THEY'RE BABY SUNGLASSES, people.

For everyone you know who cooks ever, a set of sharp, colorful knives for a steal.  They won't know these have been missing from their lives until they try them, but they'll love them ($45).

If you know anyone with a long commute or who drives a lot, a gift subscription to audible.com, where they can download audiobooks to their phone for listening anywhere.  It's the gift of a cure for road rage, and that is priceless ($45 for three months, in addition to other packages).

A darling watchdog doorstop ($24).

A personalized family of wooden peg dolls, because it's adorable ($190; won't be there for the holidays, but a gift certificate for these would be awesome under the tree).

A handy tote bag for making grocery/dry cleaning/toy/shoe schlepping feel a little less annoying ($79).
The Very Useful Tote

A salt plate, because if this exists, I am obligated to tell you about it ($45).

For those with less salty tastes, a marble slab board for rolling out pastries and making your food look fancy ($50).

Expensive, but so awesome: a printer that turns your iPhone photos into Polaroids.  Amazing for the way everyone lives and takes pictures these days ($300).
Not exciting in theory, but guaranteed to make someone's life better: a smoke detector that lets you turn off false alarms with a wave of your hand, instead of an open-the-doors and-windows-all-hands-on-deck-frantic-towel-flapping situation ($130).

The Tall and Salty Gift Guide for Gents

How's your Christmas shopping going?  Freaking out?  Me too.  If you're on the hunt for gifts for your favorite man friends, dads, brothers, husbands, or errand boys, some suggestions:

A Warby Parker gift card and the promise that you'll help him pick out a pair (bonus: comes with a hilarious snowman kit) ($100).

A Hudson's Bay Company blanket that's navy instead of the usual off-white, because it's freaking freezing ($150).

A beef jerky sampler, because MEAT ($50).
Krave Jerky Review

A scratch-off map for keeping track of his world travels ($30).
Gift Ideas

Copper mugs for making Moscow Mules ($28).

Of all the gifts I've ever given my husband, this is honestly the one he uses the most: an extendable arm back-scratcher ($6).

A cozy Christmas cardigan ($168, 30% off with code "GIFTNOW").

And because it's always fun to give toys, even to grown-ups, a crazy high-jumping pogo stick, which is somewhat silly but way more fun than say, socks ($129, but $25 off today; or try this one, which is ridiculously expensive -- and that's saying a lot given that the other one is a hundred bucks -- but you can jump four feet high!).

The Tall and Salty Gift Guide for Ladies

Friends, I have received my first "Last minute gifts!" email, which means that it's time to get around to posting my gift guides.  [Side note: J. Crew, you need a little refresher on what procrastination really means.]  The first installment, below, is full of suggestions for the ladies in your life: moms, sisters, friends, and coworkers who you couldn't make it through the day without (without whom you couldn't make it through the day?).  Perhaps we should just call this "suggestions for girls you love because they don't correct your grammar" and get on with it.  Ergo:

A stack of simple rings that look way more expensive than they really are and that she'll want to wear with everything ($25 with free shipping, too).

A cute glasses or sunglasses case so she quits losing her pair in her purse ($45).

And if her purse is really bad, a light for expeditions therein ($8).

Perfect for pregnant friends who can't indulge this season, a candle that's still not the real thing, but she'll appreciate the thought ($42).  And you could always pair it with a bottle of the good stuff down the road.

The choose-your-own-adventure version of address stamps: you give this stamp, and the recipient gets to go online and pick the style she loves from tons of choices.  Thoughtful and you give her the gift of making sure she gets what she wants ($40).

In case of emergency: Wine One One ($17.50).

A cookbook from Lemonade, a Southern California restaurant that I keep seeing everywhere and looks tremendously delicious (and if these guys like it, well, OBVIOUSLY) ($18).

A beautiful necklace that can be customized with an address important to her: locations of engagements, weddings, first homes, favorite restaurants?  (That one might be just me.) ($175)

For those who want to sleep like Oprah (and let's be honest, who doesn't?), new jammies ($74 and $128, 20% off with code OPRAH).

Fancy monogrammed cocktail napkins for feeling like a grown-up ($58 for 4).

A quirky beanie with pink flamingos and palm trees to remind her that that warmth is out there, and it's coming eventually ($40).

Happy giving!

The wonder that is Target

My usual provisions-and-cleaning-supplies-run got a little spice last night: Target is, as per usual, killing it.  The downside to this, of course, is that a) I vastly exceed my paper towel budget; and b) I wander around in there for ages and end up eating dinner (Giada, obviously) at 10 pm.  I refrained from purchasing too much that wasn't on my list, but some great things that caught my eye, in case you care to indulge:
And if you want some advice from real Target pros, follow these ladies on their site or Instagram -- they find the best Target stuff.  Happy shopping!

Top to bottom:
Carlisle Metal Dining Seating, $94.99 - $99.99 per pair.
Threshold Oilcan Soap Dispenser, $9.99 (I have one of these next to every sink in my house -- I love them).

Valentine's Day Gifts for Dudes

Every year, I find myself wishing that Valentine's Day wasn't so close to Christmas, because I'm running low on both good ideas and funds.  Should you find yourself in the same position, a little help:

Rail and Wharf dopp kit
Alternate ViewBecause nothing says "I love you" like ridiculous violence and terrorists, the three latest Batman movies for a movie marathon (Amazon, $20). . .

(L-r) TOM HARDY as Bane and CHRISTIAN BALE as Batman in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ action thriller “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES”
Angle
Emile Henry Pizza Stone
And the most important thing: an actual valentine.
Grammar lovers' Valentine Card - 4x5 folded card with envelope - You had me at the proper use of "you're"

And with that, we come full circle: the very first post on Tall and Salty was last year's Valentine's Day Gift Guide for Fellows, which you can check out for more ideas, if you're so inclined.  Thank you so, so very much for stopping in and for reading Tall and Salty.  I've had so much fun writing it, but your comments, emails, and visits have undoubtedly been the highlight.  Thanks for everything!

PS: More gifts for fellows.
